Thai Massage Today
The name ‘Thai Massage’ is viewed by some as inaccurate, since it has its roots in India and Indian medicine. The Sanskrit term ‘nuad’ means to touch or massage, while ‘boran’ means that which is ancient, sacred or revered. A more accurate term, then, is ‘Ancient Massage’. The popularised western term ‘Thai Yoga Massage’, denoting the northern style, may have caught on as it gives an indication of the vast difference that exists between the practice and more common western techniques, such as Swedish Massage or Aromatherapy.
Though Nuad boran has spread throughout the world, teachers still encourage students to pray to and ask for guidance from the founding father, Doctor Jivaka. Most importantly, though, every good practitioner gives Nuad Boran in the spirit of Metta, loving-kindness, and with the compassionate intent that the receiver be healed and be happy.
Prayer to the Founding Father
“We invite the spirit of our Founder, the Father Doctor Shivago,
who comes to us though his saintly life.
Please bring to us knowledge of nature, that this prayer will show us the true medicine of the universe.
Through this prayer, we request your help, that through our hands,
You will bring wholeness and health to the body of our client.
The god of healing dwells in the heavens high, while mankind remains in the world below.
In the name of the founder, may the heavens be reflected in the earth
So that this healing medicine may encircle the world.
We pray for the one whom we touch,
That they will be happy and any illness will be released from them.”
